Relativism Begins to Awaken a Sleeping Giant in the U.S.
Wednesday, August 1st has marked the beginning of a battle that will awaken a sleeping giant in the United States. For some of us business owners, being told “you didn’t build that” is far from the truth. What is Obama trying to say here? Does that mean you don’t own it or have control over it? On Wednesday, millions of Americans have lost their freedom to decide what type of insurance they want or risk fines and not have insurance. This mandate currently includes all businesses and a year from now religious institutions will be required to pay for services that violate their consciences. Churches, religious companies, charities, hospitals, and schools that oppose services such as abortion-causing drugs, contraceptives, and sterilization will be stripped of their religious freedom. The mandate provides exemptions that not even Jesus would qualify for, even if he operated an organization alone.
Responding to a controversial statement against gay-marriage by Dan Cathy, the president of Chick-fil-A, mayors of Boston, San Francisco, and Chicago have argued that Chick-fil-A has no place in their cities. These pushbacks against Cathy have caused a backlash that skyrocketed Chick-fil-A’s business on Wednesday. Hour-long waits and 37-car backups didn’t hinder people from beginning to awaken a sleeping giant. Customers either came to support free speech, traditional marriage, or were against economic bullying.
Another fight is also under way against recently passed bills to limit abortions past 20 weeks. After scientific evidence proved that unborn babies can feel pain past 20 weeks, recently passed bills protecting the unborn were signed in nine states. Although the bill passed in Arizona, the U.S appeals court has blocked the enforcement of the state ban protecting the unborn on Wednesday.
Relativism Begins to Awaken a Sleeping Giant of Truth
With so many issues agitating society, how do we know where to begin solving these problems? In one day, the following important issues concerned this nation: contraception, religious freedom, censored commerce, free speech, right to choose life or death, traditional marriage, gay-hating, and so forth. This nation is obviously confused. It’s confused because it doesn’t have belief in truth, absolute and objective truth, the sleeping giant that’s been hibernating in this nation for a long time. So what will awaken this sleeping giant? The realization of the presence of an ideology that has been thrust upon us over the past several decades, an ideology that claims that there is no real truth, only “personal truth”. This disease of the mind is known as Relativism.
“Your truth is not my truth, so my truth is not your truth.” This is Relativism at its core. Behind the relativist ideology is a presumption that there is no truth to find, therefore everyone’s beliefs are equal. Relativism implies that it is not necessary to learn from other groups since all groups are “right” as far as regards themselves. Furthermore, comparing values of different societies would be ridiculous since both societies have the right to decide their own “truth”. Criticizing Hitler for the Holocaust is absurd as well under this line of reasoning. Who are we to judge if we ascribe to Relativism? The implications of relativism ultimately prove to be irrational. Indeed the one objective truth of the relativists is that there is no objective truth. This very statement refutes itself.
Relativism will inevitably awaken a sleeping giant in the United States. It will cause cultures and societies that must live among each other to clash their “truths”. One group will believe they are right, and all others will be forced to accept their “truth”, since it will be considered just as valid as our truth. In the end, there can be no dialogue and no search for the true nature of reality in such a society. Ultimately, all will be forced to relinquish any notion of truth as such and abandon all belief in truth to make room for the new god of modern society, Relativism, with its only moral value being tolerance.
Objective Truth: Our Nation Depends on It
On the other hand, objective truth is the truth of reality itself. It cannot be contradicted. It cannot be contingent. It doesn’t depend on the influences of society. It transcends every society and pertains to all people. It is universal. Sound logic and reasoning, accurate history, true science, and natural law are all manifestations of objective truth. We are subject to these things just as we are subject to the law of gravity. We cannot break the law of gravity, but we can break ourselves against it. There will always be truth that we don’t fully understand, yet even this truth must be submitted to. Lack of understanding concerning the law of gravity will not prevent a person from being killed if they think that they can walk on air over a canyon. We must be humble to conform ourselves to truth, especially to truth we do not understand fully. Our survival as a nation depends on it.
Is Our Nation Ready to Awaken a Sleeping Giant?
If this country seeks truth, it will set aside emotion and partiality and begin to work together to find it. The recognition of objective truth will foster a society of dialogue, debate, and critical thinking. Its purpose will be to search for one goal- truth. This search will unite, not separate. This search for truth will be kept in mind when the judicial system sets down laws not based on opinions. This search for truth will be in mind when an idea or statute is placed on this nation. The search for truth will be in mind for our own journeys as we grow in wisdom, understanding, and knowledge of this world. May we all pray for this transformation ardently that it may happen before it is too late for our country.
